Caveat emptor. This can NOT act as a bridge, nor, I suspect a repeater. This product seems to function ONLY as a Wireless Access Point. That is to say, it can take your wired system to wireless.
Google on another computer to see how to do this. Ran through the configuration wizard, but it did not seem to work. You have to change the IP address of the laptop to do this. Switched over to using Safari browser on windows laptop. I have many D-LINK products (router, switches) and so went with this access point.
Configured the "LAN" to automatically get an IP address, and configured the WAN to have DHCP off. In the configuration I had, I was connecting to a wired network with a router. Now I could log in to the access point and start configuration. Took a while to find that this worked consistently, and slow progress to configure this one change at a time, but once I found this approach, got the thing configured and installed. IE constantly complained about not being connected and kept taking itself offline. After some experimentation, found that I could change one parameter and then hit apply, and the changes would be made. MS Internet Explorer 7 on my windows laptop (XP SP2) was what I tried to use first. This always generated an error message and did not make the changes on the page.
D-Link products have been straightforward to configure and use, but not this one.I did not want to change the addresses on the hardwired network at home so I hooked this access point up to a laptop directly, just a lan cable between the laptop and the access point, nothing else connected. Went to manual mode, made multiple changes on each page, and then clicked on the "apply" button. Everything seems to work now. Set the static IP address on the laptop to be one number higher than the default access point IP address (in the rightmost portion of the IP address). I was not able to make progress at all.
On the advice of a seasoned IT pro, I replaced the repeater with this Access Point. The signal from repeater to PC would always be good. you just could not get to the Internet. We had been using the D-Link Wireless Repeater in conjunction with the D-Link DI-524 Wireless Router. It came up working from the beginning and has not failed in three weeks of daily use. The repeater would work for a few minutes, or maybe a few hours, or maybe all day. The router has always worked fine. But then, inevitably, it would have to be power-cycled because the wireless PC would no longer be able to connect to it.
And DLinks tech support is terrible. It's a piece of crap. And all of my computers are neat and tidy.who wants to do this.I got the login to work the first time (after having spend 1 hour with Tech support) but have not been able to get it to work with my network.
My home is completely wired and have generally never had trouble in the setup or operation of it. At home, my entire network.and computers.are all on a different network. First, I am not a novice in setting up networks at home.
That means in order to even get the thing to work, I have to remove one of my computers from my network, adjust some advanced network settings, and hook it directly to the access point. The gal on the phone didn't even understand networking basics. It is also all based on DLink products up until now (which is going to change). The fundamentally poor design is that this comes out of the box with a static IP of 192.168.0.50.
That means you can't change it, until you log into the device using another device with an address in the same range.
Good performance for a reasonable price. This is a nice, simple WAP that works as advertised. The web-based set up was easy to implement.
